Expect the unexpected is the rule with prolific Japanese director Takashi Miike, and his latest offering to reach DVD and Blu-ray is a match for anything in his oddball filmography. Set in 1972, it's a musical (more Bollywood than MGM) centring around Taiga (Satoshi Tsumabuki), a poor kid with a chip on his shoulder who comes to Tokyo and almost immediately winds up in reform school as a punishment for rumbling in the street. But not before he bumps into the beautiful Ai (Emi Takei), scion of a well-to-do family, whom he rescued from a nasty skiing accident when they were both little kids some twelve years before. Still overwhelmed with gratitude, she pulls some strings and gets him sent to the same exclusive prep school as her. Bad idea. Class, meet the exchange student from hell.

It wasn't until after Fitzgerald's death in 1940 that the novel captured the zeitgeist and forged a positive consensus amongst critics. Baz Luhrmann's Gatsby is the fifth adaptation of the great novel, and bizarely, is the fifth adaptation to receive widespread condemnation.
