Adam Shankman Trades His Hairspray for a Nutcracker

Adam Shankman, director of 2007’s musical remake Hairspray and the upcoming Rock Of Ages, starring Tom Cruise and Russell Brand, is in talks to helm a new version of The Nutcracker for New Line, adapted from E.T.A Hoffmann’s original 1815 tale The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.

The story, inspired by the enduring ballet, sees a girl’s wooden toy soldier magically coming to life and taking her on a wondrous adventure.

With a script being written by Darren Lamke, who scribed Bryan Singer’s next film Jack the Giant Killer, as well as Shrek Forever After, this new take on the story will presumably play to Shankman’s knack for mixing big-name stars with high camp. Perhaps this will prove more of a family-friendly and successful fit than Andrey Konchalovskiy’s disastrous attempt at updating the tale in last year’s box-office catastrophe The Nutcracker in 3D.
