Last week, ubiquitous Irishman Michael Fassbender expressed his desire to once again don the signature helmet and cape of Magneto in a sequel to Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class. We covered the story and suggested that an announcement could well be expected in the near future.

It has taken merely 6 days for further news on the matter, and it's safe to say that it comes from the top.

Speaking to Coming Soon at the IFP Gotham Independent Film Awards, 20th Century Fox chairman Tom Rothman provided confirmation of the studio's intention to provide sequels to both First Class and to Rupert Wyatt's Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

After receiving a special tribute award at the ceremony, Rothman revealed, "Both of them were really great scripts and so we have to be sure to get great scripts again..."We're working hard on the scripts for both of them, but we have every hope of moving forward with them."

This kind of positivity should delight fans and inspire confidence in the quality of these future projects. The studio is reportedly keen to re-enlist the services of Vaughn and Wyatt for the sequels, however it's worth noting that it can occasionally be tricky to convince emerging directors such as these to return for sequels - for fear of being tied down to a franchise.
