If you have not seen The Departed then look away now, spoiler alert! Despite the fact that out of the stellar cast of Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, Martin Sheen, Ray Winstone, Alec Baldwin and Mark Wahlberg only the latter two remain standing, screenwriter William Monaghan has revealed an idea for a sequel which would involve all the main characters. While seeing the return of seemingly dead characters is not uncommon for Sci-Fi, what is the deal for something as gritty as The Departed?
Monaghan told Collider: "My idea actually is to set the film before, during and after the action of the first film, which I think would be extraordinary. If those guys want to cough up the dough, we can do it any time."
Monaghan went on to describe how, exactly, it all fits together so that it makes sense. "Essentially, in the middle section of the thing I’ve intended, you’d see actions that take place during the original Departed, but aren’t on screen in the original Departed. There would be off-screen things that occur at that point in the story. But it would work seamlessly as a movie of its own."
I for one would love to see a sequel to The Departed, which well and truly saw director Martin Scorsese back to his best. However as Monaghan points out it seems that it all relies on Warner Brothers “coughing up the dough”.
Come on chaps, in a world of sequels and pointless remakes (yes I know The Departed is a spin on Infernal Affairs) this is definitely one I’d cough up my dough to see in the cinema. Although I wouldn’t want to be sitting next to Jack Nicholson if he insists on waving that thing around. If you’ve seen the Departed you’ll know what I mean and if you haven’t, watch it now!
