Akira Remake - Cast Speculation

25 Oct

Gary Oldman, Helena Bonham-Carter and Garret Hedlund have been linked to Jaume Collet-Serra’s unnecessary live-action remake of 1988’s cult anime Akira. Rumours from Twitch suggest that Gary Oldman has been offered the role of Colonel Shikishima with Helena Bonham-Carter possibly playing Lady Miyako. It has also been rumoured that Tron: Legacy’s Garret Hedlund is a possible contender for portraying Kaneda.

No impressive cast is going to justify any remake or ‘re-envisioning’ for the fans of the original, and neither is the choice of the director - named back in July. Collet-Serra’s filmography has consisted of the dreadful House of Wax (2005), Goal! 2: Living The Dream, Orphan and this year’s Unknown. Therefore he’s the obvious choice to remake one of the most influential and unique animated films of all time...

Akira was originally a manga series by Katsuhiro Otomo, and was later adapted for the screen by him. Set in a 2019 Neo-Tokyo, the story follows a motorbike gang led by Shotaro Kaneda. When his childhood friend Tetsuo Shima is kidnapped by a secret military project, Tetsuo becomes a psychopathic psionic on a rampage through Tokyo who has to be stopped. Collet-Serra’s remake is set to release in 2013.
