BFG - Big Filmic Goings-On?

30 Sep

Dreamworks are planning a live-action version of Roald Dahl’s classic story, The BFG. From Wes Anderson’s The Fantastic Mr Fox to Mel Stuart’s Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, Dahl’s magical stories have proven themselves popular on the big screen. So this could be a good choice.

BFGThe novel has already had an animated adaptation back in 1989. Released by Cosgrove Hall Films, the BFG was voiced by David Jason. However, with a live-action film there will be apprehension with regard to the visual styling (presumably a lot of CGI) and its faithfulness to the source material.

E.T. writer Melissa Mathison will be adapting the beloved novel for the big screen. Meanwhile, Kathleen Kennedy (Jurassic Park, E.T) and Frank Marshall (The Bourne Ultimatum) are set to produce. No actors or a director have been announced.

The story follows Sophie as she is kidnapped from her orphanage by the BFG. Taken to Giant Country, she befriends the ‘Big Friendly Giant’ and explores the origins of children’s dreams. However, the safety of children is under attack by a group of mean giants. A battle ensues as the Queen of England and the armed forces are enlisted to help the BFG’s struggle against evil.

No release date has been mentioned.
