Spielberg Lined Up for "Moses - This Time It's Biblical"

29 Sep

Imagine the excitement when I read the headline Spielberg to direct movie about the life of Moses. I mean, I'm only 27 and already one of the world's most famous directors is prepping the story of my life. Sadly, it's my slightly more biblical, elder, white-bearded namesake that Warners is looking for Spielberg to direct a film about, not me.

Drat.

Deadline reports that Warner Bros, having originally sought Darren Aronofsky for the project are now turning their attention to Spielberg to direct the epic. The film, scripted by Michael Green and Stuart Hazeldine will follow Moses from eponymous basket to the red sea and the ten commandments - the later stuff is ground already covered by Charlton Heston of course.

This is just an ambition for the studio at the moment, and Spielberg, as always has a number of projects in the pipeline - Indiana Jones 5, Lincoln, Warhorse, and something fantastically called Robopocalypse. But if he did take Moses on it could really be something. A return to the old school, big budget, big spectacle epics of Ben Hur, Spartacus and the like that hasn't really been successful since Gladiator spawned a host of poor  attempts (see Troy, Alexander et al), and one of the few things Spielberg's not tried his hand at.

Here's hoping.

Toby Moses has been a journalist for five years, working for the Mail on Sunday (don’t judge), the Observer and the Guardian – largely on Sport with a smidgen of technology stuff thrown into the mix. He loves the cinema, probably due to weekends spent with his father seeing child suitable fare like the Das Boot: Director’s Cut, and a video shop down the road which would lend an eight year old Nightmare on Elm Street. He’s currently trying to branch out into screenwriting, so maybe one day it’ll be his offerings being dissected on the site.
