Atwell starred as Peggy Carter opposite Chris Evans' Steve Rogers in the first Captain America film, but when asked about her involvement in the sequel back in September, she replied "I'm not allowed to say yet."
As The Avengers revealed that she was still alive in the present day, and with Atwell's straight answer avoidance, it was assumed that she would probably be appearing in flashbacks to the 1940s in The Winter Soldier. However, during an interview with TimeOut, she confirmed that she would not be returning to the sequel.
Atwell's performance was one of my favourite things about Captain America so it's a shame that she won't be returning but the search continues for the film's female lead. It is still rumoured to be Sharon Carter, Peggy's daughter with actresses such as Felicity Jones, Anna Kendrick and Mary Elizabeth Winstead all reported to be in consideration.
With Anthony and Joe Russo expecting to start filming for The Winter Soldier in March, confirmation will no doubt soon arrive. The film will arrive in cinemas on April 4, 2014.
