As a curiosity, it's a great piece. As a part of the finished film, it just wouldn't work. The scene is contrary to the lighter, more exciting tone of the rest of the film. It shows no signs of the humour and guilt-free thrills that inform the best moments of Joss Whedon's super-blockbuster.
Despite a bumpy beginning, I think they made the right call.
