The Sweeney was a hugely popular British police drama that followed the Flying Squad, a branch of the Metropolitan Police specialising in armed robbery and violent crime. Writer/director Love, best known for hooliganism film The Football Factory and the remake of The Firm, has transported the action from its original 1970s setting to the modern day.
The trailer suggests a basic whodunit plot, combined with a lot of action sequences, all perpetrated by a load of faaackin’ Cockney geezaaahs. My main problem was that I expected Drew to launch into some kind of rap every time he appeared on screen. I can’t take him seriously as an actor, in the same way that I laughed consistently at Rihanna in Battleship.
It’s not that the trailer is necessarily bad. It just looks like The Sweeney will be the kind of film that’s a bit of fun when you watch it, but will be forgotten in an instant.
The Sweeney will be released in UK cinemas on September 12th.
