In an interview with Zoomin Movies, Mikkelsen – best known for his role as Bond villain Le Chiffre in Casino Royale – was asked about the long-standing rumour that he would play the villain in the Alan Taylor-directed sequel, squaring off against Chris Hemsworth’s Asgardian hero.
“That’s not happening unfortunately … I had a meeting with them, but it was a little too late. And then Hannibal came, at the same period.”
So it seems that Thor 2 now has a void where its villain should be and with The Avengers becoming one of the highest grossing films of all-time, the pressure is on Marvel to keep its cinematic universe strong. With the return of Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Hopkins as Odin and Natalie Portman as Jane, the foundations are there for a strong sequel, as long as they can get the villain right.
Hopefully they will and Thor will succeed in bringing the hammer down again when it is released in November 2013.
