Have a look at the trailer and see if you agree with me.
The tone of the film is interesting, if derivative. It looks like it could be a bigger budget of Drive. The sell is reasonably compelling, if hardly original: I've done bad things, someone has come to claim vengeance, there's nothing anyone can do to help me.
The problem is, "someone coming to get me" is not a six foot five monster with anger management issues who can't be stopped, it's Tom Cruise. And that isn't the kind of "someone" to fill you with fear (Scientology aside). The showdown that brings the teaser to a close is the kind of standoff that we've seen so many times before in the movies - our hero is outnumbered, but what the bad guys don't know is that he is hard as nails and they are about to get served. But this doesn't work the same way - it just looks like Cruise is going to get a proper kicking (and the whiny "really" at the end is the kind of thing that woud get Nathan Jessup riled up).
I hope I'm wrong. I like Cruise's work, when he is properly cast.
But I don't think I am.
Jack Reacher is due for released in December. I probably won't be at the front of the queue.
