One of the most galling things about American cinema is that Hollywood has a constant desire to remake anything that any other country produces that is popular. J-Horror constantly gets the remake treatment and already this year’s Indonesian martial arts masterpiece The Raid is slated for a “US-language” reboot.
It’s not surprising that the Americans want their own Inbetweeners Movie really. They have remade the TV series and the original film is set to be released in the US this September. Considering the success of our movie, which had the biggest opening weekend of any comedy film in the UK ever and became easily the most successful British comedy film of all-time, it’s no surprise that Hollywood wants a slice.
Reportedly, original co-creator of the series Iain Morris has been attached to write the movie and it may well get released under a different name to try and avoid the inevitable comparisons. This would be an absolute travesty and I’d be very disappointed in Morris if this is true.
One of the things that makes The Inbetweeners work so well is that it perfectly captures what life is like as a teenager in Britain. With films like American Pie already doing that for the Americans, it’s difficult to see where this new idea will fit into the market. I doubt Morris will be able to capture America the way he captured Britain and so I can’t see any way this will work.
As the ever-eloquent Jay would say, this project is as fucked as Neil’s dad’s arsehole.
