“Verhoeven took [Robert Heinlein's 1959 novel] from one extreme and made it almost comical, whereas our job is to be a little more faithful to the book, and ground it a little more."
Apparently joining the social commentary in front of the firing line is the over-the-top violence that punctuated Verhoeven's original.
“The more expensive a film is, the harder it is now to make it that violent.”
While I have my doubts about whether any film featuring a human/bug faceoff can ever really be realistic, the remake has gone a long way to reassure me by adding in the jump suits – armoured battle suits famed from the original novel. If they're bringing more explosions to the party, this remake just might be a good thing after all.
[Although, I've seen the sequels. Don't hold your breath.]
