His solo work is filled with critical duds such as Zookeeper and The Dilemma, whilst his work with Adam Sandler isn’t exactly comedy gold. Here Comes The Boom is his latest, with him as a teacher moonlighting as an MMA fighter, starring alongside Salma Hayek. Here’s the full synopsis:
“In the comedy Here Comes the Boom, former collegiate wrestler Scott Voss (Kevin James) is a 42-year-old apathetic biology teacher in a failing high school. When cutbacks threaten to cancel the music program and lay off its teacher (Henry Winkler) Scott begins to raise money by moonlighting as a mixed martial arts fighter. Everyone thinks Scott is crazy – most of all the school nurse, Bella (Salma Hayek) – but in his quest, Scott gains something he never expected as he becomes a sensation that rallies the entire school.”
So from the sounds of things, it’s like Glee meets Warrior… without the music or the awesome fight sequences. Great.
The trailer does have a few laughs, but it’s clear that both James and Hayek are phoning in bare minimum performances for the pay check and the script is mediocre at best. Cannily, they might be saving the best bits for the actual film, but I feel that’s probably unlikely. Get ready for another forgettable snoozefest!
Here Comes The Boom will get a UK release on November 9th.
