Speaking to Empire magazine, Renner, producer Frank Marshall and director/screenwriter Tony Gilroy have hinted at what Legacy and beyond could perhaps entail for new kid on the block Aaron Cross (Renner) and everyone's favourite amnesiac assassin Jason Bourne.
In the interview, Renner talked about his character Cross, who is "coming from a completely different background to Jason [Bourne]. He knows exactly who he is; he signed up to this...He wants to be part of a team. I can tell you he was in the military then he joined the [program]. He's a person who wants to be part of something... to have a sense of purpose. But then it's taken away."
It was Frank Marshall though who hinted at the franchise's future: "You see there are several different [programs] in the movie with different skill sets. All possibilities are open. My dream is that in the next one we see Matt and Jeremy team up."
Damon, of course, has previously stated that he wouldn't be returning to the franchise especially without Supremacy and Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass, so a successful Bourne/Cross alliance would hinge on convincing the actor to return.
Personally I think it makes sense to get Bourne back in it somehow, if only for the possibility of convenient title formations. The Bourne Collaboration perhaps? Sorry...
The Bourne Legacy opens on 10th August and also stars Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Scott Glenn, Joan Allen, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac.
