Jor-El was a leading scientist on Superman’s home planet of Krypton. He foresaw the imminent destruction of the planet and was able to save his infant son Kal-El (later to become Superman), transporting him to live amongst humanity. He will played by Russell Crowe (Gladiator) in Man Of Steel, alongside Henry Cavill (Immortals) as Clark Kent and his super-powered alter ego. Michael Shannon (Take Shelter) will crank up the villainy as General Zod.
Man Of Steel began shooting in August 2011 with Zack Snyder (300, Sucker Punch) on directing duties, hoping to bring his distinctive visual flair to an iconic figure. Although, hopefully he’ll bring less of his knack for ignoring narrative and character development in favour of CGI beasts and young girls in fetish clothing. Erratic direction could be the film’s Kryptonite.
Despite lukewarm feelings towards Snyder, comic book fans have been buoyed by the fact that Christopher Nolan, architect of the hugely successful Batman reboot, has signed on to Man Of Steel as producer. Surely the man behind Inception and The Dark Knight will not allow Snyder to make another Sucker Punch?
We will find out next year as a bird, a plane… or Superman flies into UK cinemas in June 2013.
