Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 Gets An "Epic" Trailer

Epic? Really?

Language is constantly being devalued in this age of hyperbole, we use the word "awesome" and "genius" to describe trivial things, when they are supposed to represent concepts bigger than the average person is capable of achieving. Pizza is pretty good but it's not prone to inspire a deep spiritual shift within you. An animated gif can be very funny but it's probably not smart enough to build a large hadron collider.

"Epic" is another word that is being diminished every time it is abused. The scale and grandeur of things like Lawrence of Arabia, or even the Lord of the Rings, is no longer the standard of an epic when we see Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 being described as an epic.

Observe...

A relatively small number of people running at an even smaller number of people (with wolves), over the fate of a rather inconsequential child, is not the makings of an epic. When The Dark Knight Rises boasts a story that threatens to tear down the world around the character and scenes containing 11,000 extras, seeing around 100 people in a large empty space fight over a kid is simply not good enough for the "epic" label.

Do not mistake my complaints with blanket Twilight hating, I can find value in the first move and Breaking Dawn - Part 1. They are not great movies, or even particularly good, but they work on their own terms.

The Twilight Saga has hinged on its intimacy, the relationships between the characters are key and even when the film indulged in a battle scene in Eclipse, it was basically all about the fate of their relationship. That's what Twilight does, it applies the veneer of world-shaking drama to a simple relationship story. That is the entire saga's MO but that does not mean it is an epic.

Otherwise, I have no complaints about this trailer. It's delivering exactly what it needs to, Bill Condon and DOP Guillermo Navarro can shoot a gorgeous looking movie, and maybe the newly vampied-out Bella will finally get to do something other than glumly pine over Edward Cullen...

That would be pretty awesome.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 will be released on 16th November.
