Will Smith talks Django Unchained and being “the sequel guy”

Star of Men in Black II, Men In Black III and Bad Boys 2 Will Smith has expressed a desire not to be known as “the sequel guy”, as rumours abound of a handful of new sequels featuring the man who was once cinema’s most bankable leading man.

Despite rumours of more Men In Black movies and sequels to I Am Legend, Bad Boys, Hancock and Independence Day, Smith recently claimed in a BBC interview that he doesn’t want to just churn out franchise movies at this stage of his career.

“I don’t want to be the sequel guy. I figure I’ve got about six or seven more years where I can run and jump a little bit and then I’m going butt and gut for the rest of my career. Butt and gut.”

It seems a remarkable claim for a man who makes an awful lot of money from rehashing popular movies into poorly cobbled together sequels, especially given that he recently turned down the title role in Quentin Tarantino’s exciting new project Django Unchained, leaving the door open for Jamie Foxx.

“I came really close, it was one of the most amazing screenplays I had ever ever seen,” he said to Empire before commenting on the film’s inconvenient timing. He added: “That thing’s going to be ridiculous. It is a genius screenplay.”

Men In Black III is out now and Django Unchained is set to hit the UK on January 18th, 2013.
