You may remember that I mentioned the possibility of a new remake of the classic novel 1984 a couple of months ago; well now Imagine Entertainment are moving forward with the idea, and have attached writer Noah Oppenheim to the project to begin the adaptation.

Written by Orwell in 1948, 1984 is a dystopian look at a totalitarian future set in the world of Oceania in the year of 1984. Focusing on the issues of propaganda, surveillance, and mind control, the influential look at politics and the cult of personality that is Big Brother is a literary classic.

Centring on the character of Winston Smith, who works for a government branch called the Ministry of Truth where he alters facts and history, Orwell’s novel explores the desire of rebellion, and has been adapted several times already, with the most notable of these being Michael Radford’s Nineteen Eighty-Four which, actually released in 1984, starred John Hurt in the lead role.

The new version of 1984 is being produced by Imagine’s Brian Grazer, along with Julie Yorn and Rick Yorn. Gina Rosenblum, who was producer of the last major adaptation of Orwell’s classic, will be executive producer alongside street artist Shepard Fairey, best known the Barack Obama "Hope" poster, as he brought the project to the production company’s attention.

As for Noah Oppenheim, the Emmy-winning television producer isn’t very well known, but he is currently scripting The Secret Life of Houdini, which has Gary Ross attached at Summit, and also writing remakes of 2010′s Swedish crime drama Snabba Cash as well as 1983′s hacker classic WarGames.

Unfortunately that’s all we can tell you for now, but I’m actually looking forward to seeing this one, even if I did enjoy the original with the amazing John Hurt in the lead.
