Nolan has made his preference for IMAX over 3D very clear, and it’s a position I have a lot of sympathy for. The sheer size of the screen lends itself to a sense of immersion that is often more effective than tricksier 3D, especially retrofitted 3D. I was fortunate enough to see Prometheus at the BFI IMAX and the scale of the picture really added to the grandeur of the visuals (also the best use of 3D I’ve seen).
The franchise has got off to the best possible start with a well-reviewed debut and extremely strong box office. Lionsgate have done well on their investment, and will be financing at the same or increased levels on the second and third films. This news is encouraging, and, given the choice, I know where I’ll be reviewing when the second film is released towards the end of 2013.
