Philip Seymour Hoffman to Pull the Strings in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

catching-fire

I was late to catch The Hunger Games. I only got around to seeing it last week and was pleasantly surprised on two counts: first, the screening at the Odeon in Leicester Square was sold out a couple of months since the film’s release and, second, that the film was good. I mean: really, really good. I haven’t read the novels and so cannot comment on how accurate the film’s portayal of Suzanne Collins’ world is, but the disjuncture between the flamboyant technology of The Capitol and its dandyish denizens and the gritty natural world represented by Katniss and Peeta worked superbly well. It was also a treat to see a film aimed at younger teenagers with such a strong female lead. Katniss is fully-realised and credible, and offers a strong role model to young girls. As the father of a new baby girl, I can definitely get behind a film like this.

The film has obviously done great business and the trilogy is now certain to be completed. The second instalment, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, is scheduled to start shooting in the Autumn for release in November, 2013. Francis Lawrence will be directing what I understand is an accomplished screenplay, the cast are returning and Lionsgate are going about the business of casting the minor roles. Plutarch Heavensbee is the replacement Head Gamemaker after Seneca Crane was poisoned with the same berries that Katniss and Peeta threatened to swallow.

phillipseymourhoffmanDeadline is reporting that Lionsgate have offered the role to Philip Seymour Hoffman. I’d watch Hoffman doing the washing up, and he would be perfect for the role – Seneca was almost a sympathetic character, although you could argue that he was duped into rooting for Katniss and Peeta after being sold on the prospect of the ratings buzz that their "young love" story would generate. I understand from young friends who have read the second book that Plutarch is parachuted into the role by The President when it becomes clear that an example must be made of Katniss after she becomes the face of unrest in the various Districts. Hoffman is well suited to play the authority figure and also has a sleazy edge that will add a little colour to the character. It’s a great choice although it should be noted that he hasn’t accepted at the time of writing.
