The incident in which a Nantucket whaling ship, the Essex, was rammed and sunk by an angry sperm whale, served as the inspiration for Herman Melville's famous novel, Moby Dick. Using contemporary documents, including a long-lost account of the Essex's cabin boy, Philbrick's book details the ordeal of the ship. The crew was cast adrift in three whaleboats, resorting to terrible measures to survive the inevitable threat of starvation.
In the Heart of the Sea is being produced by Joe Roth with a screenplay adapted by Charles Leavitt but no studio is yet officially attached to the project.
