The film is a tale of revenge set against the backdrop of the Thailand underworld. Ryan Gosling plays Julian, a Miami gangster who moves to in Thailand to run a boxing ring which is a front for organised crime. Julian then falls into a grudge match with a retired police officer, known as the Angel of Vengeance.
Speaking to Empire, Refn had this to say about his latest, "The supernatural may figure, as might the existential. It's a stream of consciousness. It's based on real emotions but set in a heightened reality. It's a fairy tale."
This sounds like just the sort of hyper-violent intellectualism that Refn excels at, which means fans of his past work should be very excited for more. Only God Forgives is pushing hard for a premiere date at the Venice or Toronto Film Festivals, so keep your eyes peeled and your passports up to date.
