Since their 2006 debut with Date Movie (which spoofed The Lord of the Rings because, you know, that's a date movie), Friedberg and Seltzer have made a tradition out of crapping out ill-conceived, conceptually flawed and insultingly dumb parodies like Epic Movie, Meet The Spartans, Disaster Movie and Vampires Suck. Their brand is reliant on "Hey, I recognise that!" comedy, which is to say there is no comedy beyond the faint glow of understanding a pop culture reference.
There was a hope that Hollywood had gained a soul, realised that the reward of their low-budget, modest profit productions are just not worth the cost of inflicting another one of these movies on the world. Apparently that was a lofty dream because they are on board to "write" and "direct" The Starving Games, a parody of The Hunger Games. I'm sure it took them a long time to come up with that title.
The film will parody, among other things, The Avengers, Sherlock Holmes and Harry Potter. How timely.
The international rights are being shopped around Cannes. For our sake, I hope everyone has left their cheque books at home that day.
