This Trailer Is Lacking In Law

Lawless is one of those movies that just seems to have all the right ingredients. Firstly, the director, John Hillcoat, has nothing but good form, having previously brought us the intense neo-western The Proposition and the unrelentingly, none-more-bleak The Road.

Secondly, it has The Proposition scribe and bona fide musical legend, Nick Cave, on scriptwriting duties. Finally though, it has a stellar cast which includes Guy Pearce, Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain and Shia LaBeouf.

The story follows three brothers who run a successful bootlegging business in prohibition-era Virginia. As their business begins to become more lucrative and various other parties begin to demand a cut, one of the brothers, Jack (LaBeouf), becomes embroiled with a local gangster, Floyd Banner (Oldman). Matters are then further complicated by the arrival of Guy Pearce’s special agent, tasked with bringing an end to the operation. The screenplay is based on a novel by Matt Bondurant, called The Wettest County in the World, and Bondurant himself is a direct relative of the three brothers in question.

You can see the trailer in all its HD allure at iTunes Trailers or in homely, far more accessible YouTube.

Lawless will be in competition at Cannes in the coming weeks and is due for release in September of this year. Personally, I am very excited and expect big things from this impressive ensemble.
