With all the hype this year around a certain superhero collective, the reappearance of the bat-attired vigilante and a return trip to Middle Earth amongst others, you'd be forgiven for forgetting that there is a G.I. Joe sequel on its way. But there is, and we have lots of pictures and character posters from G.I. Joe: Retaliation to prove it.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation sees an agent of Cobra killing the majority of the Joe strike force in a surprise attack. It's left to the remaining Joes to work together in order to avenge their colleagues' deaths and defeat Cobra once again.

Although not heavy on any plot reveals, the images do give us our first glimpses of characters new and old. The major additions here are Dwayne Johnson as Roadblock, Bruce Willis as Joe Colton, the original G.I. Joe, and Adrianne Palicki as Lady Jay. Familiar faces Duke (Channing Tatum) and Snake Eyes (Ray Park) also feature as some of the only surviving cast members from The Rise of Cobra.

Another member of the Hasbro movie family, the first film was little more than a retread of Team America without the laughs. That being said, it clearly did well enough to warrant a sequel but it remains to be seen whether Retaliation can hold its own against an exceedingly tough crowd in the summer blockbuster season.

Directed by Jon M. Chu and also starring Byung-hun Lee, Jonathan Price and D.J. Cotrona, G.I. Joe Retaliation will hit the big screens in the UK on 3rd August.
