Lost in The Multiplex

Heroes in a hard-sell?

29 Mar

As the internet community continues picking up the pieces from the proverbial bombshell that was ‘Alien Turtle…gate’ (we’ll work on the name later), Michael Bay has continued to hype up his planned Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie to anyone who will listen. This time he confirmed that the movie would simply be called ‘Ninja Turtles’:

Ninja Turtles - Comic"Paramount marketing changed the name. They made the title simple. The characters you all remember are exactly the same, and yes they still act like teenagers. Everything you remember, why you liked the characters, is in the movie. This script is being developed by two very smart writers, with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles. They care VERY MUCH about making this film for the fans. Everyone on this team cares about the fans. Just give them a chance. Jonathan the director, is a major fan of the whole franchise. HE'S NOT GOING TO LET YOU DOWN."

The name change seems a little unnecessary but I’m sure these marketing types know what they are doing. Bay meanwhile is clearly going to great lengths to emphasise that this film is for FANS, and made by FANS, obviously wary of prompting a fanboy online backlash this early on in proceedings. See also his impassioned defence of the whole possible alien thing last week. The Turtles Movie is de out at the end of 2013. Remember though, this is Michael Bay, so scale down your expectations by about half and then maybe, just maybe, it won’t be a big fat steaming pile of Transformers. Prove me wrong Michael….prove me wrong.
