Peter Jackson will move directly from Hobbit to Hergé for Tintin 2

Unless you’re a film critic for the Guardian newspaper, Tintin heralded a major return to form for Steven Spielberg with the spirited young journalist (hmm, he reminds me of someone, but I can’t quite place my finger on it) very much keeping up with the (Indiana) Joneses in terms of adventure and excitement.

It was no secret that The Adventures Of Tintin: The Secret Of The Unicorn was to be the first instalment of a trilogy, based on Hergé’s comic book series, but the bearded godfather of the blockbuster has now revealed a few crumbs of information to Total Film about the production schedule for the sequel.

First of all Spielberg has confirmed that his equally bearded Tintin cohort Peter Jackson, producer of the first film, will be taking on directorial duties this time around as soon as he has finished filming the Hobbit. Spielberg said: “Peter’s doing it. I wanted to do it, but Peter has to because we made a deal. I said, ‘I’ll direct the first one, you direct the second one.’

“And Peter, of course, is going to do it right after he finishes photography on The Hobbit. He’ll go right into the 31, 21 days of performance capture.

“We’re not telling the world what books we’re basing the second movie on yet.”

However Spielberg played down comments made by his long term producing partner Kathleen Kennedy that this instalment would be based on The Calculus Affair, in but did confirm that like the first film the story would draw inspiration from more than one of Hergé’s original adventures.

He said: “We haven’t decided that yet. She’s throwing a monkey wrench into your story! It could be that. I like The Calculus Affair. So it could be.

“We have completed a story outline now. We have a writer on it. I’m just not declaring what it is. It will be more than one book, but no more than two.”

The Adventures Of Tintin: The Secret Of The Unicorn arrives on DVD and Blu-ray on 19 March 2012.

Having worked as a financial and consumer journalist over the last eight years David decided to stick it to the man by going freelance in 2010. Since then he has mainly been commissioned to write about, er, finance and after a hard day dissecting the latest chapter in the ongoing economic meltdown rather than sticking a gun in his mouth he likes to relax by watching films. His favourite films of all time are Heat, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Aliens and can't wait for Hollywood to remake those classics. Hopefully that's a joke that he won't live to regret making...
