Lost in The Multiplex

Marvel - Item 47 - Short film - Lizzy Caplan - Top Slice

The Avengers ended with an epic battle deep in the heart of Manhattan, a show-stopping moment that set the bar improbably high for the Summer blockbuster season, but what happened in the aftermath of this superheroic smackdown?

While the heroes took a well-earned shawarma break and officials figured out where they would get $160 billion to fix the city, something else happened on the streets of New York City...

Despite mixed reviews and an overwhelming sense that the Spider-Man reboot has come too hot off the heels of its Sam Raimi directed counterpart, the commercial success of The Amazing Spider-Man had our Spidey-senses tingling with the prospect of another trilogy. Sure enough, the inevitable has been confirmed with the announcement that The Amazing Spider-Man will precede two sequels.

Is it wrong to clamour for exploding heads and cancer guns while watching this film? Director David Cronenberg made his mark in the 70s and 80s with splatter horrors like The Brood, Videodrome, and The Fly: films that, while queasily horrific, had intelligence behind them. Now, with A Dangerous Method Cronenberg has stripped back the horror, leaving the intelligence and the results are just a bit boring.

Get ready for it: The official run-time for The Dark Knight Rises is in, and (to the surprise of almost no-one) it's an epic worthy of its predecessors, clocking in at 164 minutes and 27 seconds, according to the British Board of Film Classification.

Arriving in the cinemas conveniently in time for the school Summer Holidays is the fourth entry in the ongoing CGI animated Ice Age series. Money spinning franchises are as inevitable in Hollywood as the vast shifting tectonic plates in this particular entry, so even though the 3rd was critically deemed to be somehow flat or uninspired, its box office victory (as the fourth highest grossing animated feature of all time) meant that yet another was bound to happen.

"The Legend Ends" says the marketing for The Dark Knight Rises, so to celebrate the conclusion of Christopher Nolan's superb trilogy, we at LITM are bringing you a whole Batcave's worth of features on the caped crusader and his fight against Gotham's underworld...
