The Amazing Spider-Man isn't due in the cinemas until later this year but pre-production on the sequel is getting underway with Star Trek writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci signing on to rewrite the screenplay.
We have a number of brilliant first trailers this week, including a couple from Jason Segel’s latest comedies, John Hilcoat’s western drama Lawless, the full trailer for David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis and also a few more light-hearted films that give a great mix up of what can expect to see in cinemas over the next few months.
After months of trailers, clips, stills and more trailers, the big day finally arrived. The build-up to The Avengers (as I’ll refer to it as for the rest of this review) began years back with that little teaser at the end of Iron Man and since then it’s been a marketing master class in accumulating hype. It was always going to be a massive challenge to all involved to ensure that it lived up to its colossal expectations. Here was a movie which would attempt to cram several franchises worth of stars into one story and still end up with an entertaining and coherent plot. It was undoubtedly a mammoth task and one which I’m glad to say, Joss Whedon and his gang pass with flying colours.
There was a time when knowing the secret herbs and spices in Soylent Green or what Kevin Spacey FedExed Brad Pitt in Seven were spoilers, but now the label applies to any basic knowledge of the film.
The concept of the spoiler has been so thoroughly abused at this point that I am sure even knowing the title of a film will soon be shouted down as a "SPOILER!" on the internet. With that in mind, I'm hiding the three major reveals for Star Trek 2 behind the jump.
Technically I doubt at least two of these elements will be spoilers, they will likely be mentioned in the synopsis and the trailer. I wouldn't be shocked if they don't appear on the poster. However, I'm not in charge of how we define the "spoiler" so I'm being cautious here. So, as Captain Pike would, "Punch it!"
Following on from my previous rant about Hollywood recycling the same comics properties time and again for their blockbuster fare, I thought it may be pertinent to suggest some titles which would make damn fine films if handled correctly. There is an absolute treasure-trove of quality titles out there that could be turned into winning films, and for this list I've picked a few at random.
There are literally thousands of titles that would offer something new and exciting if brought to the big screen, and these are just the very tip of a gigantic and wonderful iceberg. These are examples of properties that aren't your regular superheroes, but which would make brilliant movies in the right hands. Some of them have already been in development hell for a good long time, and a couple are even heading before the cameras soon, so fingers crossed the geekery may continue to grow and evolve, rather than stagnate with the same old origin stories and slug-fests.
