It has been a long time since anyone gave a damn about the American Pie movies. Roughly ten years, when the very acceptable sequel American Pie 2 was released, but that didn't stop them producing another sequel and an endless run of spin-offs that only exist to give Eugene Levy something to do while he waits for Christopher Guest to call again.
As reported previously, Warner Bros. and Christopher Nolan don't seem particularly worried about the amount of footage and images from the filming of Bat-threequel The Dark Knight Rises, or they'd have a tighter defence. The curse of the Crow strikes again, but fear not, the repercussions this time are not nearly so tragic as the '94 original, and the sad loss of Brandon Lee. The upcoming remake of the dark superhero franchise has hit a stumbling block with Bradley Cooper pulling out of the title role. Apparently it's down to scheduling conflicts with Paradise Lost, where he plays Lucifer, not the success of the second Hangover and Limitless increasing his paycheck then. No, not at all.
After moving in, getting married, and making your significant other sit through the entire Ruggero Deodato back catalogue (that poor turtle!), having a baby is the obvious next step. Bringing a new life into this world is clearly a massive thing, but what comes out at the end is, as the cliche says, a bundle of joy. You have to wonder about Kevin Smith. You can’t argue with some of his early work – Clerks is genius, and I’m a big fan of Chasing Amy – but I’ve never been convinced that his filmography has the clout necessary to back up his Godzilla-sized ego. For every zinging line of dialogue there’s a script involving a poo monster, or some other equally irritating juvenile flourish. If you ask me, he’s misfired consistently over the past five years and although I haven’t seen Red State yet I’ve heard disappointing early notices. We’ll see – I haven’t given up hope on him completely.
A few days ago news surfaced of Mike Myers having tied up a deal with New Line for a fourth film in the Austin Powers series. Said to be a 'more personal' narrative based on Myers' relationship with his own father following Dr Evil and his son Scott, played by Seth Green. Doesn't sound much like the 'shagadelic' catch phrase packed entries of yore...
Sometimes a movie like Drive comes along and really shines a light on how much utter crap is really out there. Especially in the thriller/action genre. That's not to say that Drive is particularly original in its premise - in fact, its basic plot is pretty formulaic. But it's executed with such style by a director with an expert eye for every aspect of film-making that all of the genre cliches (and there are a few here, admittedly) will seem almost fresh.
The big news of the week is that Johnny Depp is no longer a recession-proof industry to himself, as Disney have pulled the plug on his reunion with original Pirates trilogy director Gore Verbinski on a big screen remake of The Lone Ranger.
With the excellent reception of the rebooted Star Trek, it's safe to say most of us assumed a sequel would be forthcoming. Three years on though and there was still no sign, despite Paramount booking a slot for it in June 2012. Now however it seems there is finally movement on the project; a report from Deadline suggests that JJ Abrams is now settling down with writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelofto to work on a script for the sequel, with the hope that production will start in January 2012. The cast have been contracted by Paramount so at least we know they're ready to go as soon as a script is ready.
Independent film distribution companies are facing an uncertain financial future following the fiery destruction of the Sony/Pias distribution centre in Enfield during last Monday night’s looting.
Housed in the now gutted 20,000 square metre warehouse were some 30 million DVDs belonging to the BFI, Artificial Eye, Metrodome and Dogwoof amongst others. While Artificial Eye, Metrodome and Dogwoof have lost their entire stock, the BFI confirmed that although they lost over 120,000 DVDs and Blu-ray discs in the blaze they still had access to copies of all of its titles through a second warehouse in Hackney.
