Marianne is Swedish ghost story and, much like 2008's stellar Let The Right One In, it chooses to use the horror genre as a device to explore relationships.
More than a jump scare laden spookfest, director Filip Tegstedt has created a very human, very real family drama about loss, grief and guilt.
At times creepy, funny but mostly sad, Marianne looks at the emotional and psychological root of a haunting over the haunting itself, with the ghostly attacks being brief and limited. The film prefers to look at what caused the supernatural infestation and how its arrival has worsened an already fragile home.
The zombie has had a long, rough journey through film. Smashing through the barricades of pop culture with George Romero's Dead trilogy, the zombie offered a potent mix of intelligent social commentary with bleak, brutal violence, becoming a sub-genre that both academics and horror fanboys alike could appreciate.
