Lost in The Multiplex

Date: November 2011

Marianne is Swedish ghost story and, much like 2008's stellar Let The Right One In, it chooses to use the horror genre as a device to explore relationships.

More than a jump scare laden spookfest, director Filip Tegstedt has created a very human, very real family drama about loss, grief and guilt.

At times creepy, funny but mostly sad, Marianne looks at the emotional and psychological root of a haunting over the haunting itself, with the ghostly attacks being brief and limited. The film prefers to look at what caused the supernatural infestation and how its arrival has worsened an already fragile home.

The zombie has had a long, rough journey through film. Smashing through the barricades of pop culture with George Romero's Dead trilogy, the zombie offered a potent mix of intelligent social commentary with bleak, brutal violence, becoming a sub-genre that both academics and horror fanboys alike could appreciate.

Since then not a lot has been done with the poor, lumbering ghoul; more often than not the zombie movie focused on the gore but not the substance. There are fun examples of this, but generally the gimmick gets old fast without something (forgive the pun) meatier inside.

doctor who regenerations

News arrived last night that sent the Internet into meltdown, as it was announced that director David Yates is teaming up with BBC Worldwide to put together a Doctor Who movie. Although not yet confirmed by the BBC, the information comes directly from Yates himself, strongly suggesting that it is going ahead.

Damn, Tarantino. Save some of the awesome casting announcements for everyone else. Over the last week there has been a slew of new announcements for Django Unchained, only strengthening it's status as the film event of next year.

With the night’s drawing in and Christmas lights strung up in all their unlit glory across the country, there’s a growing sense that Christmas is indeed just around the corner. And if the plethora of ghastly Christmas ads choking up the airwaves isn’t enough of a giveaway that the festive season is upon us, then the launch of cinema’s first Christmas film of the season, Arthur Christmas, should be.

Elvis Nixon

Seven years prior to the explosive interviews with David Frost, Richard Nixon met a far more amiable sparring partner, the legendary Elvis Presley. This meeting in 1970 forms the basis of Cary Elwes’ (of The Princess Bride fame) directorial debut which is cryptically titled Elvis & Nixon.

Snow White Huntsman Banner

With the new trend for presenting darker adaptations of fairy tales now in full flow, the first trailer from the upcoming Snow White and the Huntsman has debuted over on Apple.

The Stath is back! Yes, everyone, the first trailer for the latest Jason Statham action film, Safe, has appeared on Yahoo! Movies.

billy crystal oscars

Despite several far superior (if unlikely) suggestions, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have confirmed that Oscar mainstay and pitifully safe option Billy Crystal will host the 2012 Academy Awards.

oscars

During the furor over Brett Ratner's idiotic use of the word "fag" at a Q&A, which lead to his resignation from producing next years Oscars, I could not help but think back to Oscar host Eddie Murphy's stand-up years and the appalling level of homophobia running throughout his work.

Murphy has since stepped down from his duties as host of the Oscars. The truth is likely that Murphy wanted out of the show and had the unfortunate luck of having to piggyback on Ratner's scandal, which reflects poorly on him, given his history with homophobic rants.

Now that Brian Grazer (producer of Ratner & Murphy's Tower Heist) has stepped in to produce the telecast, the question becomes: Who will be the new host with the most?
