Lost in The Multiplex

Date: October 2011

It’s a rare feeling to experience movie synaestesia. But when I watched We Need To Talk About Kevin, I was overcome by the colour red. Whether it was smearing red paint, fat droplets of ruby-shaded blood, or even a slash of vivid tomato ketchup on a bare white kitchen counter, this film is drenched in red.

Yet red is used in a way I have rarely seen on film. Normally symbolising vibrancy, energy or brute anger, in We Need To Talk About Kevin, red crystallises an aching, oppressive disdain for society threaded through the movie’s tightly wound plot.

The lucky people of Comic-Con were teased with a few clips of The Raven earlier this year and now we have been graced with the full trailer, which can be seen here.

Starring John Cusack, Alice Eve, Luke Evans and Brendan Gleeson, to name but a few, this thriller looks like Sweeney Todd meets Sherlock Holmes and really encapsulates Edgar Allan Poe’s gothic style.

We've got three Blu Ray copies of Last Night to give away to lucky readers. The film stars Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley and Eva Mendes and goes on sale on 18 October, 2011, courtesy of Studiocanal.

The red band trailer for Mark Pellington's I Melt With You has arrived online. Screened at the Sundance festival earlier this year, the film follows four fortysomething friends - played by Rob Lowe, Thomas Jane, Jeremy Piven and Christian McKay - who met in college. We meet them at their annual gathering as they reminisce about times gone by.

The film features a charismatic performance from Luke Treadaway as strutting indie star Adam. Arriving at T in the Park for his gig, Adam is handcuffed to punky girl-band leader Morello. Initial frustration gives away to grudging acceptance and then the stirring of genuine feelings over the next 24 hours of the festival.

Two brothers face the fight of a lifetime – and the wreckage of their broken family – within the brutal, high-stakes world of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighting in Lionsgate’s action/drama, WARRIOR.

In the first article from a new series, Lost in the Multiplex's newest writer looks at ten films each week that deal with a particular subject - this week, it's angry monkeys.

A man claiming to be Dr Martin Harris awakes in Berlin hospital with severe head injuries and very little knowledge as to how he got there. The doctors inform him that he has been in a coma for four days after surviving a near fatal car crash. Attempting to piece together the incidents leading up to the accident, he discovers that his wife no longer recognises him and another man has assumed his identity.

A moving story of finding redemption and love in the most unlikely places, Tyrannosaur follows the story of two damaged people brought together by circumstance: Joseph (Mullan), an unemployed widower, crippled by his own volatile temperament; and Hannah (Colman), a respectable charity shop worker, whose apparent happiness belies troubles of her own.

Set in the 1970s, TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY finds George Smiley (Gary Oldman), a recently retired MI6 agent, doing his best to adjust to a life outside the secret service. However, when a disgraced agent reappears with information concerning a mole at the heart of the Circus, Smiley is drawn back into the murky field of espionage.
