It’s a rare feeling to experience movie synaestesia. But when I watched We Need To Talk About Kevin, I was overcome by the colour red. Whether it was smearing red paint, fat droplets of ruby-shaded blood, or even a slash of vivid tomato ketchup on a bare white kitchen counter, this film is drenched in red.
Yet red is used in a way I have rarely seen on film. Normally symbolising vibrancy, energy or brute anger, in We Need To Talk About Kevin, red crystallises an aching, oppressive disdain for society threaded through the movie’s tightly wound plot.
The lucky people of Comic-Con were teased with a few clips of The Raven earlier this year and now we have been graced with the full trailer, which can be seen here.
